The "PGP Technique": Preoperative Gas for Pars Plana Vitrectomy

Drs. Tina Felfeli, Miguel Cruz Pimentel, and Efrem Mandelcorn perform and discuss the preoperative gas for pars plana vitrectomy (PGP) technique, which provides good anatomic and functional outcomes in cases in which pneumatic retinopexy is not suitable. The technique has multiple applications including treatment of rhegmatogenous retinal detachments (RRD) with large breaks of greater than 1 clock hour or inferior breaks. PGP also addresses RRDs associated with peripheral breaks with concomitant full-thickness macular holes and choroidal detachments, as reported initially by Felfeli et al. in Preoperative Gas for Pars Plana Vitrectomy: A Surgical Technique for Repair of Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachments with Multiple, Large or Inferior Breaks.
