In this interview from AAO 2019, Dr. Alon Kahana discusses findings from his retrospective study investigating the use of 5-fluorouracil as a first-line therapy for severe conjunctival scarring from conditions such as Steven-Johnson syndrome and ocular cicatricial pemphigoid. After serial injections with 5-FU, they found significant improvements in the cornea. He presented his study, which was done in collaboration with Nina Jovanovic, MD, during the Oculoplastics Original Papers and Best of ASOPRS session at AAO 2019. Dr. Kahana hopes that his research will be helpful to patients who have this debilitating condition, but prospective trials are needed to confirm these findings.
