What Drives Innovation in Glaucoma Surgery?

Drs. Ronald Fellman and Davinder Grover reflect on the clinical situations that provide the impetus for developing innovative techniques in glaucoma surgery. Dr. Fellman recalls the evolution of canal surgery in children and a pediatric congenital glaucoma surgery he assisted with in the 1980s. He and the attending surgeon used a suturing technique over a standard Harms trabeculotome to be able to open up the entire canal at one sitting. A key ingredient to innovation in this space is mentorship and the creative synergy between an experienced and more novice surgeon.
