In this interview, Dr. Martin Uram, inventor of endoscopic cyclophotocoagulation (ECP), explains how ECP technology was conceived and developed, from the creation of a microendoscope to the 810-nm wavelength infrared laser. Endoscopic cyclophotocoagulation is a cyclodestructive procedure used to ablate the ciliary body epithelium to decrease intraocular pressure (IOP). Endoscopic cyclophotocoagulation dramatically shifted treatment options for neovascular glaucoma by allowing direct access and visualization of the ciliary processes. Dr. Uram discusses the advantages of endoscopy over microscopic surgery, particularly in monitoring anatomic structures in the angle during various ophthalmic surgeries.
