In this interview, Dr. Ralf Brinkmann describes the future of retinal laser treatment including temperature control and selective retinal therapy (SRT). Active feedback of the coagulation based on the real-time optoacoustic measurements of the tissue temperature helps control both lesion size and quality. Selective treatment of the retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE) is based on vaporization of melanosomes using microsecond laser pulses, acheiving subvisible photodisruption. Clinical applications may include diabetic macular edema (DME), central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR), and drusen.
