  • Am I at more risk for Plaquenil damage if I’ve had cataracts in both eyes and a retinal tear in one?

    Question:

My doctor is prescribing Plaquenil (a drug used for lupus and other autoimmune diseases) for me. Am I at more risk for retinal toxicity (damage) from the drug because I’ve had cataracts in both eyes and a retinal tear in one?

    Answer:

Your prior eye conditions do not increase your risk for retinal toxicity. However, you still need to be monitored regularly by your ophthalmologist.
