  • Can a Dilated Eye Exam Harm My Unborn Child?


    Question:

    I am going to have a dilated eye exam and I am trying to get pregnant. Is there any potential harm to baby if I were to be pregnant when I was dilated?


    Answer:

    There is no problem with dilation during pregnancy. However, very little is known about many drugs used during the first trimester especially. However, the risk of dilation is truly very, very small, if any. Please close your eye after drops are placed to dilate them. This further reduces the amount of drug that is absorbed in the body.
