Question:
Besides vitamins and supplements (AREDS-2), are there any promising treatments on the horizon to limit visual loss from dry AMD?
Answer:
There are a number of promising treatments for dry AMD, with multiple ongoing clinical research trials. Most these are drug trials, with the complement blocking agent lampalizumab now in a phase III trial. Other strategies include visual cycle modulation agents and neuroprotective agents. There also are ongoing phase II trials looking at the possible benefit for stem cell injections. However, none of these treatments have received FDA approval at this time.
