  • How do you get blackbird eye disease?

    Question:

How do you get blackbird eye disease?

    Answer:

Thank you for teaching me something. I had never heard of the term "blackbird eye disease." My search of this term led to a disease that I have known about and treated for many years: histoplasmosis. A fungus, histoplasma capsulatum, can occur in the droppings of "blackbirds" (starlings), bats and many other animals. The fungus can be found in the soil in many areas of the country. Ocular manifestations of histoplasmosis can be permanent and seriously impair vision. I suggest that you consult your ophthalmologist if you have concerns about this disease.
