Can Eye Doctor Test for Autoimmune Disease?
SEP 12, 2014
Question:
Can an eye doctor test for autoimmune disease or does it have to be a primary care doctor?
Answer:
An ophthalmologist is a licensed medical doctor who can order any type of test. Based on the eye exam, an ophthalmologist may order a blood test to diagnose a number of conditions such as autoimmune diseases, diabetes, or certain types of infections. Sometimes it is faster for the ophthalmologist to order a test. However, ophthalmologists also like to work with the patient’s primary care doctor to provide coordinated comprehensive care, which is in that person’s best interest.
