• Can I get LASIK if I have drusen?

    Question:

I was considering having LASIK surgery done but because I was diagnosed with drusen (yellow deposits of fat under the retina, in the back of the eye) six years ago, I was told that I can't have this type of procedure. I am not sure what kind of drusen I have but I noticed that there are two types: soft and hard. Does any type of drusen preclude you from having LASIK or are there are exceptions?

    Answer:

Drusen alone should not make you a poor candidate for LASIK. Your surgeon should tell you if they will limit your vision, but if the eye is otherwise healthy, drusen should not prevent you from having the procedure. Your ophthalmologist can explain why you are not considered a good candidate for LASIK.
