Can I have an intraocular lens placed in my eye if I don’t have cataracts?

Question:
I am not a candidate for LASIK. Is it appropriate to request an intraocular lens even though I don't have cataracts? I'm extremely nearsighted and have developed some type of allergy to contacts. I've tried every type of contact and nothing works. I've worn contacts for years with no problems until last year.
Answer:
What you are asking for is clear lens extraction, which will not be covered by insurance but is often selected by patients in your situation. After a good informed consent discussion as to pros and cons of the surgery and ensuring that your retina is healthy, this can be an acceptable choice for some patients.
