• If I have uveitis, can I participate in a training course where I will be sprayed with pepper spray?

    Question:

I had uveitis and had surgery a couple years ago. I am currently in a training course where I will be sprayed with pepper spray. Is that dangerous for my eyes?

    Answer:

The uveitis can flare up much like arthritis and joint pain. Fortunately, the pepper spray has a low risk of activating the uveitis. The main concern would be an abrasion of the surface or chemical inflammation on the conjunctiva of the eye. You should wash out your eyes following the exercise. If things seem slow to return to baseline, you can see your local ophthalmologist following the training.
