• Can I skydive with lattice degeneration?

    Question:

I have lattice degeneration in both of my retinas and have a retinal exam once per year. I have never had any tears or concerns with my retina detaching before (no flashes, just the occasional floater) and I’ve been told that it’s unlikely for my retina to tear or detach. As a graduation present, a few of my friends want to take me skydiving. If I skydive is there an increased risk for my retina tearing or detaching?

    Answer:

There should not be an increased risk of retinal tear or detachment from skydiving, even in a patient with lattice degeneration.
