• Can I take DMSO with an IOL?

    Question:
Will taking DMSO harm the IOL inside my eye?

    Answer:
DMSO is a chemical approved by the FDA for interstitial cystitis (chronic or ongoing bladder pain and sometimes pelvic pain) and used "off-label" by doctors to treat a variety of conditions. There is currently no evidence that DMSO causes any harm to implanted intraocular lenses (IOLs). That said, if you are taking it for an off-label problem (anything other than interstitial cystitis), then you should discuss its use and general safety with your primary care provider.
