Can I use IOLs with a gene mutation?
MAY 09, 2020
Question:
I have a gene mutation (PAI-1 SERPIN). Can my cataracts be replaced with artificial lenses without rejection due to my gene mutation?
Answer:
A mutation in PAI-1 within the SERPIN gene would alter the normal blood clotting process. Blood clotting is not a process that is triggered during cataract surgery.
Also, the artificial lenses (intraocular lenses, or IOLs) used to replace cataracts are made of inert material. If placed properly, there should be no immune response. Speak with your ophthalmologist for more information.
