  • Can I use Xiidra while breastfeeding?

    Question:

If I’m breastfeeding my 5-month-old, can I safely use Xiidra or will it affect my baby?

    Answer:

Xiidra (Lifetegrast) is an eye drop that treats dry eyes. Its effect on breastmilk or newborns has not been studied. While preliminary reports have not shown any adverse effects during nursing, until it has been formally studied, we do not know for sure. You should discuss other possible treatments with your ophthalmologist. If Xiidra is necessary, you can perform “punctual occlusion” after using the eye drop to limit absorption into your bloodstream and the rest of your body. This is done by pressing the inner corner of your eyelid near your nose for three minutes after putting the eye drop in each eye.
