  • Can punctual plugs make eyes drier and itchier?

    Question:

Can dissolvable punctual plugs make eyes drier and itchier?

    Answer:

Temporary punctal plugs are made of collagen and dissolve on their own while sitting in your tear drain. Since they block the flow of your tears away from the eyes into the nose, they help treat dry eyes by increasing tears on the surface of the eye.

Since they are placed deep inside the tear drain, patients find them comfortable and are not bothered by them. It is not typical to experience itching or increased dryness after inserting them. It is possible to be allergic to the collagen material from which they are made, but it is rare. If you are experiencing these symptoms, it may be that the plug is not sitting correctly inside the tear duct and may need to be flushed out and a new one inserted. You should discuss this with your eye doctor.
