  • Can you get trachoma by being in contact with a person who has syphilis?

    Question:
Can trachoma be caused by being in contact with a person who has, or has had, syphilis?

    Answer:
Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection caused by bacteria. One type of chlamydia, Chlamydia trachomatis, causes trachoma, an infection of both eyes. This is not the organism that causes syphilis. Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. If you have been in contact with someone with an STD please contact your doctor or public health department to be checked.
