• Can you spread herpes from one eye to the other?

    Question:

If you have herpes in one eye will using eyeliner or mascara spread it to the other eye? Or can if re-infect the eye once it has healed if you keep and use the same mascara?

    Answer:

If your cosmetics are exposed to any eye infection, they should be discarded.

Herpes will not spread from one eye to the other. You can get herpes in both eyes, but only from the exposure that caused the primary infection in the first eye.

Reactivation occurs when the virus is triggered after a period of lying dormant (inactive) in the body. We don’t know for sure what causes reactivation of the virus, but stress, trauma (injuries), or sickness from the cold or the flu, are all thought to play a role.
