  • Can Zyrtec Cause Dry Eye?

    Question:

I have dry eyes—can Zyrtec for allergies cause this?

    Answer:

All antihistamine agents, including Zyrtec, have drying effects. That is how the medication class works by "drying" out the sinuses. Unfortunately the medication is not selective to the sinus cavity and other parts of the body become dry as well. Having said that, Zyrtec, by itself, only aggravates existing dry eye disease and it does not typically create dry eyes by itself. An evaluation should be performed by an eye doctor to look for the underlying factor to why the dry eye started.
