  • Why is my child complaining about "Cartoon" images in his eyes?

    Question:

My four-year-old son started complaining about "cartoons" in his eyes two weeks ago. It happens only in the evening and the first time it happened he was scared and started crying. I put him to bed and he is fine in the morning and through the day, but it comes back in the evening. Can this indicate something wrong with his eyes? Or maybe he is just too tired?

    Answer:

It is unclear to me based on your brief description what is occurring, but this problem does not sound like an "eye" problem. I wonder if your child could be having some type of visual aura that he perceives as "cartoons." Such a condition would occur most commonly as a result of stimulation of the visual cortex. I suggest that you discuss this problem with your child's pediatrician. Perhaps a visit to a neurologist is in order.
