  • Could temporary dimming of vision be related to suspected retinitis pigmentosa?

    Question:

I have suspected retinitis pigmentosa (awaiting genetic testing). However, I am experiencing occasional dimming of the light in one eye. It becomes dark for 20 to 30 seconds and then recovers. It is also the same eye which is significantly affected. The other one is near normal. Could this dimming be related to retinitis pigmentosa or is it something else?

    Answer:

Without knowing why retinitis pigmentosa is “suspected,” it is difficult to connect your symptoms with this diagnosis. Transient visual changes are not a typical symptom of retinitis pigmentosa. Please discuss these symptoms with your ophthalmologist during an in-person exam.
