Question:
Do I have to keep a face-down position after an eye scleral buckle surgery?
Answer:
Positioning requirements after retinal surgery can vary and position requirements after retinal detachment surgery with or without scleral buckle can also vary.
Air and gas bubbles are used in the eye to tamponade (hold in place, seal off) retinal tears, holes and breaks that cause retinal detachments (when light-sensitive tissue peels off from the back of the eye). Bubbles are also used to flatten the macula and ensure that there is no fluid remaining under the macula after the repair is done in the operating room.
It is best to consult your surgeon regarding any positioning requirements after surgery.
