Does drinking water eliminate flashes?
JAN 07, 2022
Question:
I have had
posterior vitreous detachments with flashes in my side vision. If I drink about a liter of water it goes away. Is this a known aspect of PVD?
Answer:
The vitreous gel is mainly composed of water and while there may be an association between hydration status and contraction of the vitreous gel leading to traction on the
retina (resulting in
flashes of light), this has not been studied well. Currently, there is no research examining the effects of hydration status directly on the vitreous gel. Gradual hydration is best for your eyes and general health. Some individuals are at risk of high
eye pressure after drinking larger volumes of water over a short period of time (this can happen with only a liter of water if consumed rapidly).
