Does a PCO get worse if not treated?
MAR 05, 2022
Question:
My online chart states I have a PCO (posterior capsular opacification or “secondary cataract”) in both eyes, which are not significant enough visually for treatment. Does this eventually get worse if not treated?
Answer:
This is very common after
cataract surgery.
The treatment for PCO is laser YAG laser capsulotomy (or posterior capsulotomy). This is quite a quick, safe and painless procedure usually done in office or outpatient surgery center. If the opacification is decreasing vision or otherwise causing glare or other visual symptoms that impact your daily activities then the laser procedure is indicated. If it is not then there is no harm in waiting. The problem does usually progress and if it does it can be treated at the appropriate time.
