  • I got poked in the eye and now my eye often gets painful, sensitive to light and it's red. Should I be worried?

    Question:

I was poked in the eye with a finger and I immediately felt dizzy and had double images in my eye. Now my eye often gets painful, sensitive to light and it's red. I understand the redness will go away but I'm afraid that the injury might cause further complications in the future. What should I do? Do I have reason to worry?

    Answer:

Your persistent symptoms after a blunt injury to your eye suggest that you may have damaged your cornea (the clear circular "window" in the front of the eye) and/or you may have caused an inflammatory response of the pigmented tissue inside of the eye and of the clear membrane that covers the white part of the eye. Any one of these conditions requires medical treatment. You should have an ophthalmologist check your eye for possible treatment.
