  • Will childbirth cause me to have a retinal detachment?

    Question:

I had my first child in 2008, and I had a detached retina in my left eye in 2009. I am about to have my second child in seven weeks, and I am scared that it will detach again or my "good eye" (my right eye) will detach during a vaginal birth while pushing. Is this possible? Should I have a C-section to avoid all that pressure in my eye?

    Answer:

The is no evidence that spontaneous vaginal delivery increases the risk of retinal detachment.
