  • How can I reduce halo and glare from my multifocal lenses after cataract surgery?

    Question:

Is there any means of reducing or eliminating the halo and glare effects associated with multifocal intraocular lenses? Driving is hazardous for me now—it is difficult to judge the distance and speed of oncoming vehicles, more so at night.

    Answer:

Most patients with multifocal intraocular lenses (IOL) are aware of a slight halo around lights at night. Rarely, these halos can be very annoying or even debilitating. There are a few eye conditions, such as posterior capsular opacity (PCO) that can accentuate the difficulty. Occasionally, an ocular medication, brimonidine, can be successful as an "off- label" treatment for glare and halo. I suggest you see your ophthalmologist and determine if he/she can be of assistance.
