How brightly lit is an eye exam room?

Question:
How brightly lit is an optometrist's or an ophthalmologist's office for an eye exam (to read the eye chart)?
Answer:
I’m not aware of a standard for the room, as each office will differ in brightness. What usually matters more than room light is how well lit the eye chart is. The room light does matter to some patients with cataracts or others with glare who have poorer vision with the lights on. For these patients, glare can be reduced by lowering the room’s lights or turning them off.
