Is there anything I can do to avoid the formation of cataracts after retinal detachment surgery with vitrectomy and gas bubble placement?

The important step you can take is to avoid lying on your back. While you have a gas bubble, face-up positioning may further accelerate cataract formation. Unfortunately, even with ideal positioning, we know that cataracts simply develop more quickly in eyes that have had vitrectomy.
