    Question:

Is there anything I can do to avoid the formation of cataracts after retinal detachment surgery with vitrectomy and gas bubble placement?

    Answer:

The important step you can take is to avoid lying on your back. While you have a gas bubble, face-up positioning may further accelerate cataract formation. Unfortunately, even with ideal positioning, we know that cataracts simply develop more quickly in eyes that have had vitrectomy.
