Question:
How is fungus in the eye treated?
Answer:
Fungal infections should be confirmed by a culture of the eye (a sample taken, which is then examined in a lab). Medical treatments can include topical and/or oral anti-fungal medications. The only commercially available topical anti-fungal is natamycin. Compounded medications can be made at special pharmacies. The results of the culture can help determine what anti-fungal medications are best. Oral anti-fungal agents may be added to the topical regimen if the infection is severe. In some cases, a cornea transplant may be needed to remove the infection from the cornea if medical therapy is failing.
