  • How often are PDT treatments needed for AMD?

    Question:

I have wet AMD (when abnormal blood vessels grow in the back of the eye) in one of my eyes. With photodynamic therapy (PDT), what is the average time span before I will have to get it retreated? I know it varies a lot, but are we talking about weeks, months or years?

    Answer:

PDT is typically done about every three to four months. Most patients receive only one to three treatments. PDT is no longer considered a first line treatment for neovascular, or wet, AMD. It is typically used in combination with injections of anti-VEGF medicine.
