How should I protect my eyes from potential retinal detachments (when the light sensitive tissue peels away from the wall of the eye)?

Answer:
Unfortunately, there are very limited ways to protect yourself from retinal detachment, other than avoiding contact sports that could result in direct trauma to the eye, like boxing. When engaging in sports, like basketball or racquetball, where there is increased risk of direct trauma to the eye, we strongly encourage the use of appropriate protective eyewear. Regular examination of the retina is critical to make sure that there not any retinal holes or tears, as well as any areas of retinal thinning that may further increase your risk of retinal detachment.
