  • Irritated Eyelid After Rubbing Too Hard

    Question:

My eyes were very itchy a couple days ago and I kept on rubbing them. When I woke up this morning, two days later, my left eye was swollen and it really hurt every time I blinked/touched the corner (the part closest to my eye). I later discovered a tiny rip in the corner of my eyelid. What should I do?

    Answer:

I suggest that you see your ophthalmologist. She will be able to check the small area of irritation and prescribe an appropriate over-the-counter or prescription allergy drop for you to use. In the near term, check your environment for the "Ps" that cause allergy: feather Pillows, Pets, Pollens, Perfumes, Products and Pollution. Try to avoid these as much as possible. Additionally you may use an over-the-counter allergy drop and a warm or cool compress to soothe your eyes. Finally, be gentle. The eyelid skin is quite thin and vigorous rubbing can lead to swelling and inflammation.
