If I had a cataract removed as a child, who do I see about having an intraocular lens placed as an adult?
MAR 03, 2017
Question:
I had a cataract removed from my right eye when I was 5 years old (20+ years ago). A decision was made at the time of surgery not to place an intraocular lens (IOL implant) into the right eye during surgery as advancements in this field would "evolve over my lifetime and other options would be available." I've worn a soft contact lens in the right eye ever since, with a max power 10+ and had decent peripheral vision. It’s uncomfortable (because of the thickness) and does not provide very good vision. In 2016, I had corneal abrasions twice due to wearing a contact lens in the right eye. I refuse to put a contact lens back into my eye as the abrasions were painful and avoidable. What are my options for this eye? Surgery to place a permanent lens, do nothing, or are there other options? I also do not know who exactly I need to see. Do you know where I could go to seek advice regarding care of an eye after cataract surgery without an IOL?
Answer:
A good cataract specialist who places lens implants should be able to evaluate your condition and make a recommendation about the possibility of a lens implant. There are a number of options for lens implants.
