Question:
I am 63 and have two risk factors for glaucoma: 1) my optic nerve cup is large; and 2) my sister has glaucoma. How frequently should I have visual field testing done?
Answer:
As an individual with two risk factors, you are a high-risk glaucoma “suspect.” I would perform visual field testing on an annual basis, although if retinal nerve fiber layer imaging is available and your visual field is full, stable, and reliable, I’d also consider alternating visual field testing and retinal nerve fiber layer imaging at the annual visit.
