• Is bleeding normal after retinal surgery?

    Question:

I had vitrectomy and peeling of epiretinal membrane (macular pucker surgery) four days ago. This morning I noticed a few specks of dried blood on the outside of my lower eyelid. Is this normal?

    Answer:

It is normal for the surface of the eye to bleed after retinal surgery and after vitrectomy surgery. Sometimes it may bleed even a few weeks later. If your vision is affected, or if you are having pain, then you should contact your surgeon immediately.
