  • Can I have cataract surgery if I have a scleral buckle?

    Question:

About 20 years ago I had retina surgery in my left eye and have a scleral buckle still in place to keep retina intact. Over the course of the last couple years I frequently have pain and pressure in the area where the detachment took place. I am concerned that there may be other issues going in and I also have a large cataract in the eye. I am very nervous that I may not find a surgeon who is qualified to do the cataract surgery with the buckle. Is cataract surgery with buckle possible?

    Answer:

Yes cataract surgery is possible even with the scleral buckle and there is no difference in the procedure with or without a scleral buckle. Any cataract surgeon should be able to do the surgery.
