Question:
Is the degradation of depth perception an inevitable result of aging? Does everyone experience problems with depth perception? How can this be treated?
Answer:
Depth perception can decrease with age, especially if bifocals or trifocals are needed in association with high refractive correction in glasses. First, the eyes must be examined to rule out ocular conditions that may affect depth perception such as glaucoma, cataracts, or refractive error. An eye exam can tell you whether the degradation is age-related or due to specific ocular pathology.
