Is a gap in the corner of my eye worrisome?
AUG 11, 2021
Question:
I've noticed a gap between the corner of my eyelid and lacrimal caruncle. I can see a bit into my eye socket via the corner of my eye. What can cause this? It's a bit concerning, while not being exactly painful.
Answer:
It would be helpful to have more details, but as you age and lose some orbital fat around your eye, the space between the eyelid and the caruncle can increase. Similarly, as you age, the eyelid can become a bit loose leading to the same gap. There are also some glaucoma drops with side effects that can cause this.
If this results in pain, discomfort, or is otherwise concerning to you, see an ophthalmologist for an in-person exam.
