  • If laser surgery is required to repair your vision after cataract surgery, is it covered by insurance companies?

    Question:

If laser surgery is required to repair your vision after cataract surgery, is it covered by insurance companies?

    Answer:

I'm not sure what you mean by "repair your vision" but I can think of two different laser treatments that may be used after cataract surgery. Many cataract patients develop clouding just behind the intraocular lens implant. This is called posterior capsule opacification. It can cause decreased vision and can occur weeks, months or years after the initial cataract surgery. It is treated with a YAG laser with an in-office, quick and painless procedure that is covered by insurance. Another type of laser treatment which is occasionally performed after cataract surgery is laser vision correction to treat any myopia, astigmatism or hyperopia that may exist after cataract surgery. This is not usually covered by insurance.
