Cataract Surgery and Macular Edema
FEB 21, 2014
If I have some macular edema can I get a cataract removed? I have a pucker, but my vision is 20-60. Will I see better after the cataract is removed?
Your doctor will try to determine whether the cataract is significant enough to warrant surgery, although it’s impossible to know in advance to what degree your symptoms are caused by the cataract versus the macular problem; it isn’t possible to separately test the vision loss from the two coexisting conditions. Many people who have both conditions undergo cataract surgery to get whatever partial vision improvement they can. Only then will they have the satisfaction of knowing that they’ve done everything possible to maximize their vision.
