Should I get a multifocal IOL implanted in my right eye and wear prescription eye glasses for my left eye after surgery?

Question:
I wear glasses for distance and reading with the same prescription in both eyes. I have a cataract in only my right eye for which I am having surgery. Should I get a multifocal IOL implanted in my right eye and wear prescription eye glasses for my left eye after surgery? Or do you recommend an IOL lens implant with no prescription for my right eye?
Answer:
There is not a simple answer for this question, and more information is needed to give you a complete answer. Multifocal IOLs seem to work best when implanted in both eyes. This is a discussion you should have with your surgeon. Another option for the right eye would be a monofocal IOL to aim for distance vision which is what most patients do. However, the plan partly depends on the prescription of your left eye and the state of the cataract in that eye.
