• My sister has dry AMD, but I don’t, should I take supplements for dry AMD?

    Question:

I'm a 70-year-old female with a history of cataracts but no other eye problems. My 66-year-old sister has dry AMD. Would the AREDS 2 oral vitamins be of any benefit to me?

    Answer:

While the AREDS 2 studies demonstrated the benefit of antioxidants and zinc (AREDS 2 supplements) in slowing the progression of AMD, the studies only showed this benefit in patients with intermediate and advanced AMD. There is no evidence that AREDS supplements are helpful for patients with very early disease or with patients that may be at risk for AMD, such as those with affected family members.
