Is there another drug besides prednisone for scleritis?

Is there another drug besides prednisone for scleritis? It controls episodes, but I am afraid of long-term use.
Prednisone is the best for this condition. Usually the effectiveness will occur in short order although resistant cases might take longer. I am guessing you have had a friend who took prednisone and got some of the side effects. We tend to give this powerful drug with the assistance of your regular general physician so that systemic side effects can be monitored or stopped. If all you need is topical drops, then your treating ophthalmologist can monitor the side effects. There are some alternatives, but these are in the family of anti-cancer immunosuppressive-type medications with a much more impressive list of side effects. If you need the treatment, your best bet is to stick with the prednisone.
