  • What Has Caused My Ptosis?

    Question:

Over the past couple of years, I have noticed that my left eye appears to be open less than my right. I have always had heavy eyelids, but my left doesn't appear as heavy now that it isn't as open. I'm terrified this ptosis-like situation is serious. I was wondering what the chances are of this being the result of a tumor or something equally as serious? I'm 24.

    Answer:

It is important for you to have a complete ophthalmic examination to determine the cause of your droopy eyelid. Brain tumors can cause ptosis, however, there are other conditions such as Horner's Syndrome that should be ruled out. More likely the cause may be related to contact wear use, allergy or prior trauma. Once again, an ophthalmic examination is recommended. It is true that as the eyelid droops, the distance from the fold to the eyelid margin increases. This results in the eyelid appearing less heavy though the lid is not opening fully. The droop of the eyelid can be corrected with an outpatient surgical procedure. Your ophthalmologist can discuss this with you in detail and make a recommendation as to whether you are a good candidate for surgery.
