Should I get cataract surgery after retinal detachment surgery?
OCT 19, 2015
Question:
My cataract had become severe enough to require surgery but three sudden tears in my retina and detachment surgery delayed the cataract surgery. Three months have passed and my vision has become increasingly worse—very cloudy and blurry. My surgeon says my macula has not been damaged. The cataract surgery is in a month. Does the fact that I cannot get decent pinhole vision greatly decrease the potential success of the cataract surgery?
Answer:
Pinhole vision is a crude measure of potential vision after cataract surgery. If your macula was not affected by the retinal detachment and there is no other eye problem you will most likely do well with cataract surgery, although this cannot be guaranteed.
