Should I remove my blind eye and get an artificial one?
FEB 19, 2018
Question:
One of my corneas is damaged from multiple surgeries and procedures. I have had no vision in this eye for decades, and I patch it because if it moves a lot, the cornea blisters. Am I a good candidate for a prothesis (artificial eye)? Would removal of the eye be considered elective (not medically necessary)?
Answer:
You might be a candidate for a conjunctival Gunderson flap to prevent the cornea from blistering and allow you to wear a prosthetic. You also may be a candidate for removal of part or all of the eye so that you can wear a natural looking prosthetic. Check with your insurance provider about eligibility for this procedure.
