  • Should I see an ophthalmologist for my 2-year-old’s watering eyes?

    Question:

My son is 2 and gets watery eyes when watching TV. He sits a good distance back and the room is well lit. He seems to see fine and his eyes don't water at other times. Screen time is limited. Does he need to see an ophthalmologist?

    Answer:

It is difficult to answer this question. I am glad you have tried to assess the vision, but that is difficult in a 2-year-old child. I am also pleased the watering is not at other times. While it is possible this is from insufficient blinking or minor tear drainage problems, I think an in-person exam is needed to rule out any serious problem.
